Session 2: Group mind map of three learning theories: behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism
Katie: Search the three definitions of each theory
King : Gather information together and make the whole mind Map
Lynn: Write the reflection on this mind map
Philip: Search for some real-life examples and influences on theories
Reflections of group members:
Katie:Through the process,I have learnt a lot.First, how to create a mind map.I didn't make a mind map before, and I earned a lot knowledge when our group discuss how to achieve this task.Second,I grasp those basic concept when I search some related articles. What's more,I also know how to cooperate each other better since we share a task and move forward together.
King : I felt rather exciting to finish this assignment and make this Mind-MAP. Firstly, our group members have their own duty and we have done a pretty good job I think. Secondly, making the mind map is good for learning these three theories. It is a clear way to see the definitions, the related examples and influences on theories. Last but least, it is beneficial for knowing each other and do a better job for our next group assignment. I hope our group would be better and better!
Lynn: This mind map helps us to easily add ideas on learning theories together and identify the link or relationship between our ideas, which enables us to have connected ideas, not only several separate ideas. Also the mind map builds a whole view of learning theories, linking Behaviorism, Cognitivism and Constructivism.
Philip: Mind-map is easy for us to collaborate with one another as every member of the group can add the points in and organize the ideas systematically. However, if there is much information that we want to present, we can't put all the things in the mind-map. On the other hand, some additional information as remarks is needed. The explanation of the examples given in the mind-map is shown below:

The explanation of the examples given in the mind-map is shown below:
Behaviorism
Example
A
At
school, we set different regulations for students to create and provide a safe
learning environment for both students and teachers. Therefore, we also set up
a reward scheme to encourage students to behave well. If students can behave
well and attain some levels, they will be given stickers and stamps. After
collecting a certain number of stickers and stamps, they will get a prize or a
certificate which is the extrinsic motivation. This can help the school to
build up a good learning environment and achieve the goal.
Example
B
As
some students do not submit their homework on time, we set the rules as shown
in the above. We would like to help students correct the bad habit of
submitting homework late by having meetings with parents. The arrangement helps
to shape students’ behaviour.
Example
C
Affection
development can also be done by encouraging students’ good behaviour. With the
help of the extrinsic rewards, like stamps, students are motivated. After a
period of time, it can become a habit and students can behave internally. The
moral values can be recognized.
Cognitivism
Example
A
Before
we teach students something new, we need to compare their previous knowledge
with what they are going to learn. For example, students need to learn how to
measure the volume in P5. As they learnt how to measure the area in P.4. they
can compare the difference between area and volume. By calculating the area of
the shapes, we can guide students to calculate the volume. It is called
scaffolding which refers to the instructional techniques
used to move students progressively toward stronger understanding in the
learning process.
Constructivism
Example
A
We apply this theory in many aspects at school. Service
learning is one of the examples. We ask students to organize the activity by
themselves. Some of them are MCs, some of them are responsible for the gifts,
some of them play magic tricks and some of them do musical performance.
Different skills (e.g. communication skills, organizational skills,
problem-solving skills) are developed during the learning process as students
are learning by doing.
I particularly like the example of scaffolding presented in your group's mind-map. The example is very clear and organized which shows us clearly on how scaffolding can be done in a real classroom. One minor comment - it would be better to include the original link to the mind-map in this blog post as the text in the picture is too small to read.
回覆刪除You really put a lot of effort into the mindmap. It's comprehensive and detailed with concepts and examples, in which way makes the readers more clear about the knowledge. But one little suggstion for you is that you can organize the mindmap in a more simple and clear style, I think that will make it easier to size the clues and key points. Hope you wouldn't mind~^_^ Good job!
回覆刪除sorry, a justify -* eaiser for the readers to seize
刪除I like the idea of incorporating real examples (in this case, real lesson plan and learning materials) in the concept map. The examples would definitely make it easier for the reader to grasp the ideas of the learning theories.
回覆刪除I like the example you raised to elaborate this three keywords, since they are logical and objective. Especially for the example A illustrated for behaviorism, the prize and certificate can always encourage students to behave well.

回覆刪除It is very attractive and the photos show the effective explanation of the teaching example. The use of gradient colour is really helpful to express the ideas in different hierarchy, which is a kind of technic of information visualisation to organise the thinking. You have a real teaching example to support strongly your understanding of those theories. You did a great job!!
回覆刪除I like your group's colorful mind map and it is very all-round and detailed in each theories. Besides, adding some pictures help audience to understand the concepts quickly. You divided up the work well and each of us can know the responsibility clearly. Also, I learned a lot from the examples on the bottom of this page ~~~Good job!
回覆刪除It is a quite organized mind map and your thinking of these three theories is also quite logical and clear to read. And the examples are also related to out real life experience. Thank for your sharing. And the use of pictures to explain the concept is also clear and comprehensive.
回覆刪除I like the idea that your group not just type the text to state the definition, influences and examples in the mind-map. You can integrate the mind-map with real teaching situation. Apply the 3 learning theories to the lesson. Great work.
回覆刪除Your group divided the work reasonably. The mind map not only just present the theories but also provide some example to support your points. Well done!
回覆刪除You listed out the examples in a very clear manner. I agreed with your examples for behaviourism and cognitivism which were really detailed. For constructivism, I think that it is not only learning by doing. I feel that their interactions with their peers or teachers is what helps them enhance their learning.
回覆刪除How intelligent of you to figure out a solution to add images into this mindmap!!! Using pictures to illustrate cases makes it much more easy to understand. For possible improvements, you can use more colors to highlight the structure, for example, using brighter colors like orange to highlight the three theories.
回覆刪除The mind map show more detail of concepts, especially the examples of the case. The content was powerful to learners understand content and colourful of images and chart.
回覆刪除I think your mindmap is well-organized with different color to show relationships. I really like the real-life examples part as it is always more easier to understand methodologies with practices. Besides, the reflections part show your good teamwork.
回覆刪除The mind-map presented in a colorful way which is eye-catching! The theories interpreted not only in a systematic way with pictures but with detailed and thoroughly with concepts and examples, which definitely can help learners to get the concepts quickly. However, the description texts fonts in the boxes are bit small that made them hard to read so I’d suggest giving learners its hyperlink that could become perfect. Thanks for sharing!
