What is TED?

Ted is a mobile app (we are not talking about online web here), where video talks of different topics are presented, like topics of science, culture and academic issues etc. Its slogan is "Ideas worth spreading".

The mobile app TED is very user-friendly, we can see the design is very clear. At the bottom, we can save videos in "My Talks" and you can click "search" to find the videos you would like to watch by entering the key words of topics or speaker. And we can see there are many popular videos in the middle.

Randomly clicking a video, we move to this page. There is a brief introduction of this video in the middle and there are 4 buttons above the intro. By clicking the first three buttons, we can save this video to "My List" and watch later; clicking the last button enables to share this video to others or on other social community. When we drag down this page, we can see there are other related topic talks.

The advantage of TED

1.It has different subtitles.
We can click the bubble button and to open subtitle function and choose a type of language. From the pop-up menu, select the language of your choice. If your language is not in the list, it’s because it hasn’t been translated by volunteers yet.
2.It has diverse resources.
We can lick the bottom of the APP button named ‘discover’ to open a new world. After that, you can gain knowledge from different fields by clicking ‘Tags’ bottom, and the list using an alphabetical sort, which is convenient.
You may search 3D printing to wind energy, and it would break your own through and comfortable zone.

The disadvantage of TED
1.It is lack of interactive connection

We may as well compare Ted with Bilibili. It has a pretty new function called "Danmu" --- the sliding comments. When we are watching the films, we can comment on the scene and others who are also watching the film or later watchers can see the Danmu.
It is a easy way for us to find consensus and even a good way to solve the questions when we feel confused about some parts.

2.It is lack of responses from the speaker.

We can take Tencent Movie Player as an example even though it is for entertainment mostly. When some of the films have come out, they will post the related movie stars under that film. Fans can ask questions about the film or even the stars themselves.
Of course they can't answer all of the questions, they still can pick several questions and answer them. If they are quite famous, Tencent even presnt the link to their Weibo Account. If the Ted Talk speakers can answer some academic questions for the listeners and have their own Twitter or Facebook link under the talk. The fans can easily follow them and see when they are ready for a next talk.

  1. To be honestly, I like watching videos on TED but I never thought about use the app as an learning tool.Yes,sometimes we ignore many kinds of learning in our daily life.
I like the "advantages and disadvantages" the most. The lack of interaction is really a bug of TED but I saw many comments below the video on TED video and Weibo. It proves that people really learn something through the videos.
    Thanks for your good work!~

  2. I like watching TED videos but I mostly watch them via YouTube. It is good that you have included some screenshots of the TED app showing the 'Download' and 'Favorites' features. With these two features, the app is quite handy for user to keep a to-watch list on their phone. It is also quite interesting for your group to compare TED with Bilibili. I have used Bilibili before and personally I think "Danmu" blocks the scene and disturbs the watching experience so I turn it off most of the time. But I do agree that the information presented via 'Danmu' is useful in helping viewers to understand the scene.

  3. In the presentation of this group, I learned that TED is a user-friendly e-learning software. This tool provides students with a good chance to learn things from a video which is limited to less than 18 minutes, leading to an efficient learning model.

  5. It's glad to hear that the TED has a mobile app. With the save function, we could now easily organise our "schedule" of watching the video.

It's rather normal that the app is lack of interactive connection, as after all TED does not serve as a platform for e-learning courses. It is, instead, live streaming or recording of talks by different speakers. In this regard, the lack of interactive connection should be understandable.

  6. I found I spent months watching TED to learn English but never learning from it,maybe I need to watch it in TED APP not in Tencent Video

  7. I totally agree with the idea that TED is lack of interactive comments, just like Danmu in Tencent video. Since it can help other learners to understand the knowledge easily by viewing some comments.

  9. TED for me is a good platform to know what’s the hit topic, innovative thinking and new trends in social development. It is a useful tool for adult learning, but I don’t think that is suitable for children even to learn english. And in that kind of public speaking, it includes the skill to convey the speaker’s idea but may not have a strategy for teaching and learning.

  11. TED is a user-friendly e-learning software. The students can help understand the topic, and teachers easy to edit learning resources to application. And the application provide simple ideas and content to listener but the limited is using other device to connect the application as iPad, Laptop etc. However, any tools can help you explain topic and ideas that it is best of learning tools.

  12. Your group's presentation is very engaging and interesting. It shows the functions, advantages and disadvantages of the app, just like a introduction handbook with voice. Morepver, when you discribe the disadvantage part, you compare the TED with other apps, that's great. It makes more sense and easier for me to understand what you mean. Well done.

  13. Thanks for your introduction about TED. You group illustrate TED completely with its functions, pros and cons. As you mentioned, TED cannot achieve the interaction during class, which I agree with you. TED can be viewed as a useful learning resource store when teachers design class.
